Bringing Back Makeup Vanity Stations

Considerations for your “Get Ready Station”

Who doesn’t love the charm of Grandma’s old vanity setup? You remember – she had that little 3-mirror vanity setup with a stool. She had all her products organized and accessible… whatever happened to those?

Well, they’re still around. Maybe they fell out of favor for a bit, but really – who doesn’t want a modern version of one of those?

You can create a custom makeup station that fits right into your primary suite. Here are some things to consider.

1. Cabinetry Choices:

Go with custom-built cabinetry to maximize space for all your products. Your daily routine needs are specific to you, so don’t settle for a one-size-fits-all approach. Custom design means bespoke storage solutions for your specific needs.

Consider including drawers with dividers for organizing makeup and beauty products, as well as shelves for storing towels and toiletries. And get this – you can choose to integrate fridge drawers, ensuring your luxury skincare products are stored in pristine condition.

Imagine having different stations for different categories: contact lens stuff, jewelry, perfume, skin care and more. Maintain cohesion by ensuring your cabinetry color and door style are seamless and consistent. Or, make a bolder statement by incorporating a complementing wood tone, allowing the area to stand on its own.

In this primary bath remodel, the makeup station boasts a corner setup with a lowered countertop, allowing for convenient access to products. Additionally, it includes a shallow drawer and a ledge for effortless organization of everyday essentials.

With daily routines in mind, this primary bath’s drawer setup was cleverly designed with just enough depth for organization of all the skincare and makeup essentials!

2. Countertop Considerations

Maintenance: Consider the level of maintenance required for the countertop material. You can go for low-maintenance options that are easy to clean and maintain, especially in a space where makeup and beauty products may be used frequently.

Style: Select a countertop material that complements the overall style and design of the bathroom. Whether you prefer a sleek and modern look or a more traditional and elegant aesthetic, choose a countertop material that enhances the visual appeal of the space.

Color and Pattern: Take into account the color and pattern of the countertop material as it can significantly impact the overall appearance of the vanity area. Choose a color and pattern that coordinates with the rest of the bathroom design and complements the color scheme, or let your personality speak with something more visually interesting in your own daily needs vanity station!

In this Lavish master bath remodel, Senior Designer Alicia Saso integrates a beautiful honed marble top into the makeup station. The waterfall edge accentuates the space’s sleek look.

3. Mirror, Mirror

Size and Proportion: Ensure that the size of the mirror and countertop or mounted makeup mirror is proportionate to the available space in the bathroom. A large mirror may overpower a small vanity area, while a small mirror may not provide adequate visibility for certain self care tasks.

Location and Shape: This is your opportunity to let your creativity shine. Experiment with a funky-shaped mirror for a whimsical aesthetic, or keep it classic with a mounted, moveable magnifying mirror. Some prefer to match their mirrors above the sink vanity for a cohesive look, while others accessorize the space with a decorative mirror, art, trinkets, trays, and more.

Since this makeup vanity station was placed in the corner of this primary bath remodel, the client opted for art in lieu of another large mirror, and added a countertop magnifying mirror for her makeup and skincare.

4. Lighting

Lighted mirrors are a game changer when it comes to creating a functional and stylish makeup station. These innovative fixtures combine the functionality of a mirror with integrated lighting, providing optimal illumination for grooming tasks.

With built-in LED lights surrounding the mirror, lighted mirrors offer even, shadow-free lighting that mimics natural daylight, making it easier to achieve flawless makeup application.

Another clever and stylish option for lighting in a makeup station is to integrate sconces directly into or around the mirror. By mounting sconces on either side of the mirror, you can create a flattering, diffused light that enhances visibility and eliminates harsh shadows. For added versatility, consider installing the sconces on dimmer switches, allowing you to adjust the brightness according to your needs and preferences.

5. Cool Storage Ideas

Your Senior Designer will design drawer dividers or organizers to keep makeup and beauty products neatly organized and easily accessible. Consider incorporating pull-out trays or baskets for storing hair tools and accessories.

Another added touch would be incorporating a docking drawer outlet for any skin or haircare devices to stay plugged in without adding to the counter clutter!

Docking drawers add practicality to any space by hiding an outlet, and keeping a dedicated home for corded appliances like hair and skincare tools.
