What Should I Know About Ceiling Design?

I’m interested in remodeling my kitchen and would like to do something to the ceiling. However, I’m not quite sure what I should know about ceiling design. Help!

Hi Ginger,
When it’s time to design a new kitchen, there are several things to consider within the realm of ceiling design. People often forget about the ceiling, actually. Remember, besides the floor and walls, the ceiling is one of the largest spaces in a room. It’s a blank canvas to play with! Some options to consider include:
Tray Ceiling: This type of ceiling adds depth and interest to a room. It can be painted or finished with a different material than the rest of the ceiling to add visual interest.
Coffered Ceiling: This type of ceiling is made up of a series of recessed panels. This can add a sense of elegance and sophistication to a space.
Beamed Ceiling: Exposed wood beams can add a rustic or farmhouse feel to a kitchen. They can also be painted or stained to match the overall design aesthetic.
High Ceiling: A higher ceiling can make a room feel more spacious and open. This can be especially effective in small kitchens.
Wood ceiling: applying the wood planks that coordinate with the wood flooring sometimes emphasizes the connection in the space. It also adds warmth to the room.
A Barrel Vault: Adds a nice curve and softens a space while creating interest. Note how this works in an isolated spot over the sink in the above photo.
Applying other materials: Using interesting materials such as ceramic or tin ceiling tiles to clad the ceiling or create a custom moulding design.
